The International Orthodox Music Festival with the support of the Ministry of Culture of the Russian Federation and by the blessing of His Holiness Patriarch of Moscow and All Russia Kirill is conducting the first Competition of composers of sacred music.

The main goal of the Competition is to popularize and revive academic sacred music, and awake the interest in it in both contemporary composers and wider audience, to discover and encourage talented composers, help the realization of their creative abilities as well as to spread and promote new academic sacred music.

Composers of all ages, education spheres, confessions and citizenships can take part in the Competition. The try-out will be conducted anonymously by correspondence, based on the manuscripts sent by mail under a motto. The final audition will take in Saint Petersburg in a form of an open audition in the Grand Hall of the Saint Petersburg Philharmonic named after D.D.Shostakovich as part of the Lenten Concert Series-2012. The compositions admitted to the Final will be performed by the Mariinsky Theatre Chorus.

The Competition is held in the following nominations:
- Major sacred choral composition a cappella (length up to 40 min)
- Choral miniature to canonical texts, texts of folklore sacred verses or sacred poems by Russian poets (length up to 7 min., no more than 3 instrumental parts are allowed).
All the compositions must be written to the texts either in Russian or Church Slavonic and have no previous publishing or performance history

The dates of the Competition:
The try-outs – till September, 15, 2011
(the date is determined by the stamp on the envelope)
The final audition – February-April, 2012
The participants of the try-outs are determined by the Organizing Committee
of the Competition in the strict accordance with the Provisions of the Competition.
The laureates and diploma holders of the Competition are determined by the international Jury. The list of the participants of the try-outs will be published on the official website of the Competition no later than October, 1, 2011. The results of the try-outs will be published no later than January, 1, 2012.

The Organizing Committee announces the prizes in each nominations:
In the nomination “Major sacred choral composition”
I Prize – 100 000 roubles;
II Prize – 50 000 roubles;
III Prize - 30 000 roubles;


In the nomination Choral miniature there are the following prizes:

I Prize – 50 000 roubles;
II Prize – 30 000 roubles;
III Prize - 10 000 roubles;


Additional prizes:
Audience Award (determined by the audience votes);

The prize of the Mariinsky Theatre Chorus (determined by the votes of the choir members of the Mariinski Theatre Chorus);

The personal honorary prizes of the members of the Board of Trustees;
The winners of the Competition become Laureates and are awarded with a prize and an honorary medal.

The competitors of the Finals who do not become Laureates are awarded with diplomas and memorable badges.

The Jury leaves it at their disposal to divide or withhold any of the prizes and award special prizes.

The submitted materials are not returned and not reviewed.
The pieces of the Laureates of the Competition will be published in the Kompozitor publishing house and issued as a CD.

All the pieces taking part in the competition will become part of the archive of the International Orthodox Music Festival and will be presented in free access at the official website of the Festival.

The registration fee is not required
